Healing Hands: Preparing for Our First Medical Camp in Laikipia

Access to healthcare remains a significant challenge in many Kenyan communities. At GMF, we're preparing to launch our first free medical camp in January 2026, bringing essential health services directly to underserved populations in Laikipia County.
The statistics are sobering: In rural areas like Rumuruti
and surrounding communities, many residents travel over 20 kilometers to reach
the nearest health facility. Preventable conditions go untreated, chronic
diseases remain undiagnosed, and maternal health faces significant challenges.
This is why our Healthcare Initiative was born.
What to Expect from Our Medical Camps
Scheduled to begin in January 2026, our quarterly medical camps will offer:
1. Comprehensive Health Screenings
- General
medical consultations
- Blood
pressure and diabetes checks
- HIV
testing and counseling (with complete confidentiality)
- Maternal
and child health assessments
- Eye
and dental check-ups
2. Treatment and Medication
We're establishing partnerships with pharmaceutical companies and healthcare
providers to ensure we can offer free medications for common conditions. From
antibiotics to chronic disease management drugs, we aim to provide immediate
relief and ongoing support.
3. Health Education Workshops
Prevention is better than cure. Each camp will include educational sessions on:
- Hygiene
and sanitation
- Nutrition
and healthy eating
- Disease
prevention
- Family
planning
- First
aid basics
Focus Areas for Our First Camp
Our inaugural medical camp will prioritize:
- Maternal
Health: Prenatal checks and postnatal care education
- Child
Wellness: Vaccination information and growth monitoring
- Chronic
Disease Management: Hypertension and diabetes screening
- Elderly
Care: Geriatric health assessments
Building Sustainable Healthcare Bridges
While medical camps provide immediate relief, we're also working on longer-term
solutions:
- Establishing
referral systems with local hospitals
- Training
community health volunteers
- Creating
health records for follow-up care
- Developing
telemedicine capabilities for remote consultations
Our Preparations
Currently, our team is:
- Securing
medical equipment and supplies
- Recruiting
volunteer healthcare professionals
- Conducting
community needs assessments
- Establishing
safety protocols and consent procedures
- Planning
logistics for our January 2026 launch
Community Collaboration
We believe healthcare works best when communities are involved. We're
consulting with local leaders, existing health workers, and community members
to ensure our services are culturally appropriate and address real needs.
